Calcium Oxalate Urolithiasis	One of the highest-risk breeds	5-10 years	SEVERE	Urinalysis twice yearly from age 4. Imaging for any straining, hematuria or repeated "cystitis" — a male Bichon straining to urinate is an emergency until proven otherwise.
Early-Onset (Juvenile) Cataracts	Elevated	1-5 years	MODERATE RISK	Annual CAER ophthalmic examination from age 1.
Patellar Luxation	15-25%	4-6 months	MODERATE RISK	Orthopedic exam at 6 months and annually; grade both stifles.
Atopic Dermatitis	Common	6 months-3 years	MODERATE RISK	Rule out flea allergy and food trial first; intradermal or serum allergen testing only once secondary infection is controlled.
Periodontal Disease	Very common	2-5 years	MODERATE RISK	Oral exam annually; anesthetic COHAT with full-mouth radiographs — small-breed disease is largely subgingival and invisible on a conscious exam.
