The Bengal is the closest thing to a working dog in a cat's body, and the surrender stories almost always follow the same script: somebody bought the coat and got the temperament. These are powerful, intelligent, water-curious cats who will open doors, run taps, scale bookcases and demand a job. In the right home that is spectacular. In a quiet flat with an owner away ten hours a day, it becomes shredded furniture, night-time zoomies and litter-box protest. Before you fall for the rosettes, check your local law: many jurisdictions restrict or ban early-generation hybrids, and the generation number is not always disclosed honestly by sellers. Ask any breeder for the generation, the parents' health testing and their policy on returns. Enrichment is the whole ballgame — vertical space, puzzle feeders, daily structured play, and ideally training sessions, which Bengals take to readily. The coat needs almost nothing. Talk to your veterinarian about heart screening and about the eye and gut conditions the breed is watched for.

With school-age children who understand cat body language, often yes — they are playful and robust. With toddlers the issue is intensity rather than aggression: a fast, powerful cat and an unsteady toddler are a poor mix, and interactions should always be supervised.
