Breed ratings describe breed-level tendencies compiled from published breed references and veterinary experience. They cannot predict an individual cat. Most cats are not pedigree cats at all, and even within a breed, early socialization, handling, health and the individual animal shape behavior far more than the breed label does — which is why we recommend meeting an adult cat and judging the cat in front of you.
No rating here is a safety guarantee. Any cat can scratch or bite, especially when frightened, cornered, or in pain. Supervise young children around any cat, teach them to let the cat approach and leave freely, and give every cat an escape route and a high place of its own. A sudden change in temperament is usually a medical problem, not a personality one — have it seen.

Ragdolls are the breed people describe as dog-like, and for once the cliche holds: they greet you at the door, follow you between rooms and often go limp when picked up, which is where the name comes from. That trust is charming and it is also the breed's biggest vulnerability. A cat with no suspicion of strangers and no urgency about danger is a poor candidate for outdoor access, and we see the consequences of roaming Ragdolls more often than we should. Keep them indoors, or use a secure catio or harness. They are large, slow to mature, and gentle enough that they are a standard recommendation for families and for first-time owners — with the caveat that they are strongly people-bonded and do badly in homes that are empty for long stretches. The silky coat has little undercoat, so two or three brushings a week usually suffices. Ask your veterinarian about cardiac screening, and ask breeders what heart and kidney testing the parents have had.

Many do relax markedly when held, which is where the breed name comes from. It varies by individual and it is not a switch — no cat should be handled in a way it is trying to escape, however relaxed the breed's reputation.
They are one of the more tolerant breeds and a common family recommendation. Tolerance is not consent: teach children to let the cat approach and to keep all four paws supported, and supervise every interaction with young children.
We advise against free roaming. Their trusting, unwary temperament leaves them poorly equipped for traffic, dogs and people with bad intentions. A secure catio, an enclosed garden or harness walks give them outdoor time safely.
