Canine Hypothyroidism: The Great Mimicker

Learning Objectives

• 1Identify the classic clinical presentation of canine hypothyroidism including the dermatologic, metabolic, cardiac, and neurologic manifestations that distinguish it from normal aging
• 2Interpret a complete thyroid panel (total T4, free T4 by equilibrium dialysis, TSH, TgAA) and recognize the limitations of each individual test including sick euthyroid syndrome and drug-induced T4 suppression
• 3Calculate and prescribe levothyroxine at the correct starting dose, specify the appropriate blood draw timing for monitoring, and adjust the dose using a structured 25-50% increment protocol
• 4Recognize and manage hypothyroid complications including myxedema coma, hypothyroid peripheral neuropathy, and drug-induced hypothyroidism from sulfonamides and phenobarbital
• 5Evaluate the evidence for integrative adjuncts — selenium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and acupuncture — and counsel clients accurately on their role as adjuncts to levothyroxine therapy
