Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disease in dogs and the most frequently misattributed to 'normal aging.' This course follows Moose, an 8-year-old Golden Retriever, through the complete diagnostic workup — including the thyroid testing minefield, sick euthyroid syndrome, and drug confounders — through levothyroxine dosing, monitoring protocols, and the complications that emerge when the diagnosis is missed. Integrative adjuncts including selenium, omega-3s, and acupuncture are evaluated with honest evidence levels.
Learning Objectives
1Identify the classic clinical presentation of canine hypothyroidism including the dermatologic, metabolic, cardiac, and neurologic manifestations that distinguish it from normal aging
2Interpret a complete thyroid panel (total T4, free T4 by equilibrium dialysis, TSH, TgAA) and recognize the limitations of each individual test including sick euthyroid syndrome and drug-induced T4 suppression
3Calculate and prescribe levothyroxine at the correct starting dose, specify the appropriate blood draw timing for monitoring, and adjust the dose using a structured 25-50% increment protocol
4Recognize and manage hypothyroid complications including myxedema coma, hypothyroid peripheral neuropathy, and drug-induced hypothyroidism from sulfonamides and phenobarbital
5Evaluate the evidence for integrative adjuncts — selenium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and acupuncture — and counsel clients accurately on their role as adjuncts to levothyroxine therapy
