Bassets are one of the easiest breeds to love and one of the easiest to let get into medical trouble through kindness. Their temperament is famously patient and forgiving — patient with children, agreeable with housemates, cheerfully stubborn with everyone. The clinical realities are structural: those long ears create a warm, closed ear canal that grows infections if it is not cleaned routinely, the long low back is vulnerable if they get overweight or take stairs and furniture at speed, and the breed gains weight almost recreationally. Half the Bassets we see are carrying kilos their spine and joints cannot afford, because those eyes are very persuasive at dinnertime. Feed to a waistline, do the ears weekly, use ramps where you can, and this is a sturdy, long-lived, wonderfully companionable dog. Know also that a Basset is a scenthound to its core: outdoor time happens on a leash or in a fence, because when the nose engages, the ears — figuratively — turn off.

Yes — they are among the most patient, kid-tolerant breeds we see, and they generally coexist happily with other dogs and cats. Their laid-back temperament makes them a genuinely easy household companion.
How much exercise does a Basset Hound need?
Modest but real: one or two unhurried walks a day, ideally with sniffing time, keeps a Basset healthy. They will happily do less, and letting them is how they become overweight — which their long back and joints tolerate badly.
Do Basset Hounds bark or howl a lot?
They can. Bassets have a deep bay they deploy when bored, lonely, or on an interesting scent, and it carries through walls. Company, routine, and enough sniffing exercise keep it down; long solo days do the opposite.
