The clinical realities are structural: those long ears create a warm, closed ear canal that grows infections if it is not cleaned routinely, the long low back is vulnerable if they get overweight or take stairs and furniture at speed, and the breed gains weight almost recreationally. Half the Bassets we see are carrying kilos their spine and joints cannot afford, because those eyes are very persuasive at dinnertime. Feed to a waistline, do the ears weekly, use ramps where you can, and this is a sturdy, long-lived, wonderfully companionable dog. Know also that a Basset is a scenthound to its core: outdoor time happens on a leash or in a fence, because when the nose engages, the ears — figuratively — turn off.
