The offline view: reading the day when the internet or Rosie is down

How staff open the saved, read-only copy of the day on a computer or iPad that was set up beforehand, what it shows, when it locks, and what to do when the copy is old.

When to use it

When the clinic internet or Rosie itself is down, the offline view shows the copy of the day that your computer or iPad saved earlier: who is booked, who is in the building, and the safety facts of those patients. It is read-only. Nothing you do there is saved, so keep writing on the paper sheet and enter it in Rosie afterwards.

It works only on a device that was set up beforehand under Settings › Offline devices, and only for the person and browser it was set up in. Nothing has to be installed.

Opening it

  • On a computer: bookmark https://www.drrosiedvm.com/downtime while Rosie is working, and open the bookmark during an outage. Use the www address; the saved page belongs to it. Rosie links to the same page from the Downtime view entry in the sidebar, from Settings › Offline devices, and from the page Rosie shows when it cannot load.
  • On an iPad: open Settings › Offline devices on the iPad, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, and open the new icon to finish set-up. The icon opens a start page with two buttons of the same size, Open Rosie and Offline view. A line above them says whether Rosie answered a moment ago; it never decides for you. If Open Rosie does not load, close the app from the app switcher, open the icon again and tap Offline view. Rosie opens from the icon with one extra tap. An icon added earlier must be added again.

The page asks which copy to open if the browser holds more than one, then for the PIN, passcode or recovery code you chose when you set the device up. It shows nothing from the copy until you unlock it.

What you see

  • Today: the schedule for today and the next three days.
  • In the building: who is waiting or in a room, inpatients with their code status, isolation, aggressive flag and problems, boarders, and the treatments that were due.
  • Patients: search by pet name, owner name or part of a phone number. Each patient shows weight and allergies. When nothing is recorded and allergies were never reviewed it says "Allergies not reviewed", never "no allergies".
  • Print: a one-page sheet of the schedule, who is in the building, treatments due and one safety line per patient, marked "Confidential — shred after use".

A treatment is shown as "due 1:00 PM — not recorded as given as of 2:14 PM; check the paper sheet before giving", never as overdue. The page cannot know what was given on paper while it was offline. A paused order says "Paused — do not give".

Euthanasia and deceased patients appear as plain gray cards with a name and a room, as they do on the queue board. Times are in the clinic time zone.

How old the copy is

The top of every screen says when the copy is as of. It turns amber after about six hours and red after a day ("treat it as history, not as today"). The line at the bottom shows the last time the device tried to refresh and whether that worked. If the device clock is more than two minutes from the clinic clock, the page says so.

The copy refreshes by itself while you are signed in and Rosie is open, so what you see is as new as the last time Rosie was open on that device.

Locking

The page locks itself after five idle minutes, covers its contents when the tab is hidden or the iPad goes to the app switcher, and locks if a different person signs in to Rosie on the same browser. The Lock button locks it at once. Ten wrong tries in a row erase the copy, and the device waits longer after each wrong try. The page speaks the language Rosie was last set to.

Common questions

Can I change anything in the offline view?
No. It is read-only and nothing in it is saved. Use the paper sheet during the outage and enter it in Rosie afterwards.
It says there is no saved copy on this device. What now?
The device was not set up in this browser, or the person signed in is not the one who set it up. Set it up under Settings › Offline devices while Rosie is working.
The copy says it is old. Can I still use it?
Treat it as history. Check the paper sheet for anything newer, and read the as-of time at the top of the screen.
Why does a treatment say "not recorded as given" instead of overdue?
Because the page cannot see what was given on paper while it was offline. It tells you what was due and asks you to check the paper sheet before giving.
Does the offline view need the internet to open?
No. Once the device was set up and has refreshed, the page and the copy are both saved on it. Opening the icon or the bookmark during an outage works from what is saved.
