UNDERSTANDING PARASITES IN SWINE

Internal parasites represent one of the most persistent health challenges for pigs of all types, from beloved pet mini pigs to small homestead herds and pastured swine. Worms and microscopic parasites can silently drain nutrients, damage internal organs, impair growth, and weaken immune defenses. In severe cases, heavy parasite burdens cause life-threatening intestinal blockages, profound anemia, or respiratory distress.

Historically, pig owners relied on routine calendar-based deworming, administering antiparasitic medications at set intervals throughout the year without testing. However, veterinary science and recent research show that reliance on medications alone cannot control parasites sustainably. Effective swine parasite management requires an integrated approach that pairs targeted veterinary treatments with rigorous sanitation, pasture management, and diagnostic monitoring.

THE MOST COMMON PARASITES IN PIGS

Pigs are susceptible to several distinct gastrointestinal and systemic parasites. Understanding the specific parasites you are managing helps explain why certain treatments and hygiene practices are required.

Ascaris suum, known as the large swine roundworm, is one of the most common and damaging internal parasites in swine. Adult worms live in the small intestine, but their larval stage migrates extensively through the body. Ingested larvae burrow through the intestinal wall, travel through the liver, and migrate into the lungs before being coughed up, swallowed, and maturing in the gut. In the liver, this migration leaves scarring known as milk spots or white spots. In the lungs, migrating larvae can trigger coughing, wheezing, and secondary bacterial infections.

Oesophagostomum species, commonly called nodular worms, colonize the large intestine and cecum. The larvae form small inflammatory nodules in the gut wall, which interfere with nutrient absorption and cause localized gut inflammation. Nodular worms are particularly prevalent in adult breeding stock and pastured sows.

Trichuris suis, or the swine whipworm, embeds its slender head directly into the mucosa of the cecum and colon. Whipworms cause inflammation of the large intestine, leading to bloody or mucoid diarrhea, poor body condition, dehydration, and unthriftiness. Whipworm eggs possess thick, resilient shells that can survive in outdoor soil and deep bedding for years.

Strongyloides ransomi, the swine threadworm, is an important threat to young piglets. Larvae can be transmitted directly through colostrum and milk or by penetrating the skin from warm, damp bedding, causing severe diarrhea, dehydration, and stunting in nursing piglets.

Metastrongylus species, or swine lungworms, inhabit the airways of pigs that root in outdoor soil. These parasites use earthworms as intermediate hosts, making them particularly common in pastured pigs and outdoor rooting environments.

Coccidia, including Cystoisospora suis and Eimeria species, are single-celled protozoal parasites rather than worms. Cystoisospora suis primarily causes yellowish, watery diarrhea in young piglets between one and three weeks of age, while Eimeria species are frequently found in older growing pigs and sows.

WHY MEDICATIONS ALONE ARE NOT ENOUGH

Scientific field studies examining swine management practices reveal a critical reality: routine medication use alone does not guarantee low parasite numbers. In fact, research demonstrates that daily farm management and environmental hygiene exert a significantly greater impact on parasite prevalence than simply administering preventive medications.

When pigs are housed in environments with deep bedding, permanent dirt lots, or solid floors where manure accumulates, they are continuously reinfected by the eggs and oocysts they shed. A dewormer may clear the adult worms inside the pig today, but if the pig immediately ingests thousands of infective eggs from its pen or rooting ground tomorrow, the cycle restarts instantly.

Studies show that routine removal of manure and soiled bedding from pens significantly lowers the odds of gastrointestinal parasite infections. Furthermore, washing pens and applying appropriate environmental disinfectants dramatically suppresses parasite pressure. Environmental sanitation stops the transmission cycle before the parasite ever enters the pig.

THE LIMITATIONS OF HERBAL REMEDIES

Many natural and organic pig owners look for herbal supplements or phytogenic feed additives as alternatives to pharmaceutical dewormers. Common herbal mixtures tested in swine include combinations containing thyme, lemon balm, purple coneflower, black tea, papaya seed, boldo leaf, and mugwort.

Controlled veterinary trials have evaluated these botanical preparations against infections like Ascaris suum. The scientific evidence demonstrates that these herbal mixtures do not reliably prevent or eliminate roundworm infections in growing pigs. While certain plant compounds show mild biological effects, they fail to achieve the predictable therapeutic clearance provided by tested antiparasitic drugs. Relying exclusively on untested natural remedies leaves animals vulnerable to organ damage and chronic parasite burdens.

VETERINARY ANTHELMINTICS AND TARGETED TREATMENT

When antiparasitic medications are necessary, working with your veterinarian ensures you use the correct class of medication safely and effectively.

Benzimidazoles, such as fenbendazole and flubendazole, are broad-spectrum dewormers effective against roundworms, nodular worms, whipworms, and lungworms. These medications interfere with the parasite cellular energy metabolism.

Macrocyclic lactones, including ivermectin, provide broad-spectrum control against gastrointestinal roundworms, lungworms, and important external parasites like sarcoptic mange mites and lice. They function by disrupting nerve transmission in the parasite.

Specific anticoccidial medications, such as toltrazuril, may be prescribed by your veterinarian to treat or control clinical coccidiosis in young piglets, as standard wormers do not kill protozoal parasites.

Never guess which product to buy or attempt to calculate dosages from products labeled for other livestock species. Pigs have unique metabolic rates, body compositions, and sensitivities. Your veterinarian will determine the correct medication, route of administration, and dose for your pet or herd based on confirmed parasite identification and accurate body weights.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND FECAL MONITORING

Rather than treating on a blind schedule, responsible parasite management begins with diagnostic testing. Fecal examinations allow you to treat specifically what your pigs are carrying and confirm whether your management strategies are working.

A fecal flotation using centrifugal techniques or a McMaster egg counting chamber allows your veterinarian to identify parasite eggs and calculate eggs per gram of feces. This quantifies whether your pig has a mild, moderate, or heavy parasite burden.

Strategic times to run fecal tests include during new animal quarantine, prior to breeding, before farrowing in pregnant sows, and whenever pigs show unexplained weight loss, poor coat quality, or digestive upset. Testing a representative sample of your herd once or twice annually provides a clear picture of farm-level parasite activity.

MANAGING THE ENVIRONMENT AND PASTURE

Because parasite eggs are shed in feces and mature in the environment, environmental management is your primary line of defense.

For indoor pens and sleeping quarters, remove manure and wet bedding daily. Avoid allowing thick layers of soiled straw to build up, as warmth and moisture accelerate egg development and provide ideal conditions for threadworms and whipworms. Periodically strip the pen completely, clean surfaces thoroughly to remove organic matter, and apply a veterinarian-approved disinfectant before adding fresh, dry bedding.

For outdoor runs and pastures, pigs kept on pasture or dirt paddocks face continuous exposure to ground-dwelling eggs and intermediate hosts like earthworms. Implement rotational grazing whenever possible, allowing contaminated paddocks to rest. Exposure to direct sunlight and dry conditions helps reduce the survival of parasite larvae and eggs on the ground.

Maintain clean feeding stations. Always feed pigs in elevated troughs, heavy feeders, or clean rubber pans rather than throwing grain or produce directly onto the manure-soiled ground. This simple habit prevents pigs from accidentally consuming massive quantities of infective eggs during feeding.

QUARANTINE PROTOCOLS FOR NEW ARRIVALS

Introducing new pigs without proper precautions is the fastest way to introduce heavy parasite loads or drug-resistant parasites onto your property. Any new pig should undergo strict quarantine in an easily cleaned holding pen away from your main pastures for several weeks.

During quarantine, obtain a fresh fecal sample for your veterinarian to examine. If parasites are detected, administer the prescribed treatment while the animal remains on a concrete or easily sanitized surface. This ensures that any expelled worms and shed eggs can be cleaned up and disposed of safely rather than contaminating your soil.

WHEN TO CALL YOUR VET

Parasite burdens can escalate quickly, especially in young piglets or stressed animals. You should contact your veterinarian promptly if you observe any of the following signs in your pigs:

Persistent coughing, rapid breathing, or wheezing that does not resolve.

Chronic diarrhea, loose stool with visible mucus, or blood in the droppings.

Visible adult worms passed in the feces or vomitus.

Failure to gain weight, unthriftiness, a pot-bellied appearance, or prominent spine and hip bones.

Intense scratching, rubbing against posts, hair loss, or thick crusted skin around the ears and legs, which may indicate mange mites.

Pale gums, lethargy, or weakness, which point to significant anemia from blood-feeding parasites.

By combining diagnostic fecal testing, veterinary-directed deworming, and clean management practices, you can successfully keep your pigs healthy, comfortable, and free from debilitating parasite burdens.
