Offline devices: keeping a computer or iPad ready for an outage

How a clinic lists the computers and iPads that will keep a read-only copy of the day for an internet or server outage, and how an owner revokes one.

What this page is for

When the clinic internet or our servers go down, the plan is a read-only copy of the day on the computers and iPads you choose: who is booked, who is in the building, and the safety facts of those patients. You list those devices here, under Settings › Offline devices.

This release builds the list only. Registering a device does not copy any patient data to it yet; the copy, the lock that protects it and the offline page come in later releases, and this article will say so when they arrive.

Registering a device

Open Settings › Offline devices on the computer or iPad you want to list, give it a name ("Front desk PC", "Dr. Kim's iPad"), say whether it is a shared computer, and press Register this device.

The page shows a short code beside each name, so two devices named alike can be told apart.

Anyone whose role can browse the patient directory can register a device. Roles that cannot see patient records (for example groomers and kennel staff) cannot.

Revoking a device

Owners and managers see every device in the clinic and can revoke any of them. Everyone else sees, and can revoke, only their own.

  • Revoke: the device stops being allowed to keep its copy. Use it for a replaced iPad.
  • Revoke and erase everything: for a lost or stolen device. When it next reaches Rosie it erases what it holds.

Neither is a remote wipe. They take effect the next time that person opens Rosie on that device, signed in. Until then, anything the device holds stays locked.

Every registration and revoke is written to the activity log under Settings › Data.

Common questions

Does registering a device put patient records on it?
Not yet. This release only keeps the list; the offline copy arrives in a later release.
Can I wipe a stolen iPad right now?
Press Revoke and erase everything. The iPad erases itself the next time it reaches Rosie signed in; it is not an instant remote wipe.
